These responsibilities include: Long range land use planning, administration and enforcement of the Erosion and Sediment Ordinance, Subdivision Ordinance, Zoning Ordinance, Wetlands Administration; as well as serving as the chief administrative officer for the Board of Zoning Appeals, a five-member citizen board which decides variances and may review decisions of the Zoning Administrator and the seven-member Planning Commission which advises the Board of Supervisors on land use issues.

Comprehensive Plan Update -  The Mathews County Planning Commission, with assistance from an Advisory Committee appointed by the Board of Supervisors, and a hired consultant, is currently in the process of conducting an update of the County's Comprehensive Plan.  The County's Plan was last updated in 2001.  The update process has involved a series of meetings where the Planning Commission solicited comments on the Draft Plan from the Advisory Committee members and the public.  Joint Board of Supervisors and Planning Commission Work Sessions have been held.  The Draft Plan in its current form reflects the input provided at these meetings relating to proposed future land uses, policies and action strategis.  The draft was presented to the Planning Commission on August 17, 2010 and they voted unanimusly to recommend that the Board of Supervisors hold a joint public hearing to solicit comments from the public on the plan.

The entire Comprehensive Plan draft is available to view at Mathews Memorial Library or in the Planning and Zoning Office.   To view the draft plan on this web site, click on the following links:
