The Mathews County Building Officials mission is to provide assistance to the public, contractors and homeowners to ensure that the minimum standards for construction of buildings and structures necessary are being observed in order to help protect the health, safety and welfare of the citizens of Mathews.

When applying for a building permit, please have the following permits/information available:

  • Name of Applicant
  • Name of Contractor
  • Class "A" or "B" Licensing State Required
  • Local License:
    • Must show proof of Electric, Plumbing, Mechanical & Gas Fitting State Masters Certification.  Zoning approval and Site Plan must be provided when required.
  • Determin what area the property is located in:
    • RPA/RMA or neither
  • Septic, Well, Sanitary District Approved (Approval depends on property)
  • Shrink, Swell, Soil Test must be performed if required and footing will be designed accordingly
  • Building Plans (2 Sets)
  • Flood Zone:
    • AE:  7', 8', 9' Solid Foundation Construction.  There must be at least two crawl space access openings no higher than 12" above grade and all foundation vents must be no higher than 12" above final grade to bottom of vent
    • VE:  10' or 11' Piling Construction Only (Must be designed by VA State Registered Engineer or Architect).  All Electrical and Mechanical Equipment must be elevated.
  • Erosion & Sediment Control (If required) due to the amount of area being disturbed or location of site
  • Temporary sanitary facilities on job site

Inspections are required at each of the following stages of building:

  • Footing prior to pouring concrete
  • Foundation and floor joist before sub-floor
  • Framing:
    • Rough-in electric
    • Rough-in plumbing with test
    • Rough-in mechanical
  • Insulation
  • Meter:  Can be called in once the structure is weather tight and meter base and panel is installed with ground fault outlets
  • An approved water sample:  A well and septic completion statement must be given to the Health Department and in return, an operation permit will be issued to you.  This office must recieve a copy.
  • Must have elevation certificate completed by a Virginia State registered Surveyor or Engineer
  • Final Certificate of Occupancy issued
