****Wildllife Information****

Mathews County Department of Animal Control promotes a safe and harmonious coexistence with wildlife.  Be mindful that Mathews County is a rural area and therefore is home to many species of wildlife, such as birds of prey, songbirds, waterfowl, reptiles and mammals and we urge our citizens to never approach any species of wildlife.  Mathews County is also home to many species of non-poisonous snakes and one poisonous species of snake, that being the Copperhead.

Many species such as fox, racoon, oppossum and skunk are typically nocturnal, but may come out during the day for several reasons, such as mating season, rearing young or looking for food and water during times of drought and flood.

Mathews County Animal Control works closely with licensed wildlife rehabilitators to ensure that any injured or orphaned wildlife or birds are cared for and returned to the wild if possible.  If you see any injured or orphaned wildlife, or if you have questions or concerns about wildlife, please call Mathews County Animal Control at 804-725-7177.
