The Mathews County Planning, Zoning and Wetlands Office has a multitude of responsibilities. These responsibilities include: Long range land use planning, administration and enforcement of the Erosion and Sediment Ordinance, Subdivision Ordinance, Zoning Ordinance, Wetlands Administration; as well as serving as the chief administrative officer for the Board of Zoning Appeals, a five-member citizen board which decides variances and may review decisions of the Zoning Administrator and the seven-member Planning Commission which advises the Board of Supervisors on land use issues.

2030 COMPREHENSIVE PLAN -  The Mathews County Board of Supervisors adopted the 2030 Comprehensive Plan on January 18, 2011.

OUTFALL DITCH MAINTENANCE PROGRAM -  Applications are being accepted from residents to have outfall ditches placed on a priority list to be cleaned.  Private ditches are not included in th ditch program.  During the winter months, crews will work to clear the drainage areas of saplings, bushes and other accumulated debris.  An application must be completed to be placed on the list.   Applications can be obtained from the Planning and Zoning Office or by clicking on the following link:

SHORELINE MANAGEMENT PLAN  - The Mathews County Shoreline Management Plan is now available.  The Virginia Institute of Marine Science (VIMS) has completed the Mathews County Shoreline Management Plan.  The plan serves as an educational and management tool for the County and its landowners in making informed decisions regarding shoreline management decisions.  A brochure that provides information on the plan and how to obtain it is available at the Planning and Zoning Office or by clicking on the following link:

 MATHEWS MARITIME HERITAGE TRAIL - EAST RIVER GUIDE  - The East River Trail Guide is now available online.  The Mathews Maritime Foundation, working in partnership with VIMS' Center for Coastal Resources Management (CCRM), the National Park Service and others, has developed a water trail guide to the East River.  The guide provides the opportunity for motorized and non-motorized watercraft to view historic wharf sites, homes and estates, tidal mills, marshes and wildlife along the East River.  The East River Guide is the first in a series of what is hoped to be a complete Maritme Heritage Trail for all of the major waterways in Mathews County.  The East River Trail Guide can be found on VIMS' website by clicking on the following link:  www.ccrm.vims.edu/gis_data_maps/static_maps/mathews_watertrail/index.html
